Slam ULIT P3 WORKSHOP!!!

What helps you through adversity?

Our personal power concept is based on work by Patricia Deegan, Ph.D.She did a research study asking people what helped them through emotional struggles. It turned out that most people talked about activities they did and people that gave them meaning in life, rather than medications they took. Dr. Deegan coined the term “personal medicine” to describe this. Personal medicine is what we do, but pill medicine is what we take.

Sharing our stories and increasing personal contact is one of the most effective ways that we can start to change images, perceptions, and fears about emotional suffering that often get labeled as mental illness. Our project objective is to enhance the personal power of participants by helping them communicate the many ideas, visions, and emotions of their toughest moments. This can be done in a short amount of time using the very dense and tight art form of spoken word poetry.

Join Prosperos and Spartan Press to celebrate the release of book #2 in the 2016 POP POETRY: #12poetsin12months sequence featuring:

JEN HARRIS' first book of verse: SLAMMED

Ms. Harris got her slam start in the Bay Area of California before returning to her Kansas roots and single-handedly redefining the slam poetry scene in KC. But her dedication to building a community is second fiddle to her fierce and joyful commitment to creating soul-saving, grateful and witty poetry. Her work is a redemption for the lost souls, a redeeming light for the abused and an exclamation of what it means to believe in one's self. Few poets have been able to be nurturing without nostalgia, sweet without saccharine, and powerful without force. Jen is one of these poets.

Come out tonight not to celebrate her MANY accomplishments (opening for Andrea Gibson, Slammaster and founder of PoUnd SLAM for inaugural 2 years, one of KC's top 3 poets according to Pitch Magazine, LGBT rights activist, winner of the Jim Wanser Pride award and so much more!), come out to be touched and elevated by her stunning poetry.

Cover is $10 for the event, which includes a copy of "SLAMMED".

The long running PIT Poetry Open Mic precedes Ms. Harris' reading from 7-8! Sign ups start at 6:30!

Featured reading at 8:30 sharp!
Hang out after for book signing party and poetic mixer.

Your friendly door-girl and MC, Jeanette Powers will be in the house!

#FORTHWEEKKC BEGINS IN 2 WEEKS

Every forth week of the month in Kansas City, we will be having 3 poetry events 3 days in a row. This is a great opportunity to see the diversity that KC has to offer. If you are a traveling poet who is touring and are interested in a multi day experience or a local who desires more out of your city, forth week is perfect for you. Please get out and support your local poetry scene.

On Monday...

Starting in 2010 a group of individuals recognized a need for a night in Kansas City where poets, vocalists and artists alike could use an outlet to perform their work in front of their peers. Thus creating Soul Sessions

Over the past 5 years Soul Sessions has played a key role in the Historic 18th & Vine District, keeping alive it's flourishing live music and performing arts reputation. Featuring some of the most known and unknown acts in the nation, Soul Sessions has given artist in the midwest and abroad a stage to be heard.

Each Monday many guests attend this weekly open mic that is not exclusive to one race, culture nor background. This night attracts a diverse and ever-changing dynamic of individuals the city of Kansas City has to offer. A relaxing yet entertaining night at Soul Sessions is sure to take wicked 'case of the Mondays' and project you forward into a productive week ahead.

Doors open at 7pm with mood setting music by DJ Q
The show begins at 8pm with an introduction of Da Truth Band
Open Mic starts at 820pm with hosts Matt Cobbins and Rayla
The evening concludes around 11pm

Is The World Really Going To End On Wednesday Night?? Here Is Your Local Weekly Planner For The Apocalypse...

September 23 2015 = End Of The World??

I keep on hearing about Wednesdays new apocalypse theory happening in my news feed and I remembered the end of the Mayan Calendar in 2012. I thought , the world cant end because there is so much happening this week.

"It's Destiny That The End Of the World Coincide With My Open Mic"

When I found out that this doomsday just so happened to coincide with my monthly open mic, I saw it as destiny. We are going to dedicate the evening theme to Apocalyptic  & Transformative poetry. Any Poetry That You Will Want To Read For The End Of The World...

"If your last words were a poem, Which poem would you choose?"

Let's hear it Wednesday Night....

Let us recite poetry as Rome burns...

Here is Your Weekly Planner For Armageddon...

Doomsday

Plan Accordingly....

Disclaimer:

A NASA spokesman said: “NASA knows of no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth, so the probability of a major collision is quite small. In fact, as best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years.”

info about the parent organization:

The International Beat Poetry Festival, as a non-profit organization, is dedicated to hosting, collaborating, and fostering joint partnerships for Beat themed poetry readings, workshops, plays, radio shows and much more locally and across America--and even internationally at times. The collaborations and joint partnerships extend to individuals, organizations, and representatives of universities and colleges. NBPF supports the further development and exposure of non-traditional poetry from people of all ages and backgrounds within communities where interest is significant and/or where interest needs support. The Beat Generation's significant writings and history of its original prime movers lives on from its inception in the early 1940's, and its legacy continues today by way of new writers, poets and artists of disparate influences and means of expression. The NBFP is committed to not only supporting venues in existence, but also in developing new venues where cultural preservation and the works of new artists can show yesterday meeting the living voices of today. NBFP's activities promote literacy and open exchange dialogue which incorporates the Beat history and art at its base, to break boundaries and bridge cultures with new thought, ideas, and free expression.
